For many years, it has been a Chinese tradition to equal good students with high scores. One’s performance at academic work seemed to override all other factors in judging a student’s ability. Therefore students studied only for exams, ignoring virtually all extracurriculum activities, with the approval and even demand of their parents and teachers.
